Soundproofing of Air Extraction System
Project Overview
Steyr-Werner Technischer Handel GmbH, a leading technical trading and service company in Austria, operates several technology and service centres, alongside a webshop and direct sales network. The company is also a prominent manufacturer of hydraulic hoses for various industries. The hydraulic hose production hall, which spans 2000m², was facing a significant issue with an air extraction system generating disruptive low-frequency noise. This affected communication between workstations and negatively impacted employee concentration. The company sought DECIBEL’s expertise to solve this problem, impressed by our holistic approach from analysis to final solution delivery.
Challenge
DECIBEL was tasked with addressing the constant noise from the suction machine at the rear of the hall, which was causing communication difficulties and disrupting workflow. The key objective was to significantly reduce the sound levels while maintaining proper system functionality and ensuring compatibility with the production layout, including lights and ventilation.
Scope of Work
- Site analysis and sound problem diagnosis
- Design and installation of a custom noise-reducing housing
- Incorporation of two cooling fans for system efficiency
- Modifications to account for light strips and ventilation pipes
- Use of metal-perforated panels and an inspection door
Solution
DECIBEL designed a custom housing made from metal-perforated panels to enclose the air extraction system, allowing for noise absorption while maintaining airflow. The housing included recesses for the existing lighting and ventilation infrastructure, ensuring seamless integration without disrupting production processes. Two fans were installed to ensure the machine remained cooled, preventing any operational interruptions.
Results
The installation reduced noise levels by over 12 dB, exceeding expectations. Steyr-Werner employees noticed a significant improvement in communication and concentration even before the project was completed, expressing their satisfaction with the immediate results. The project successfully improved the working environment for the staff, enhancing productivity.
Soundproofing in Industrial Settings
Industrial environments such as production halls often generate noise from machinery that can impact employee well-being and productivity. In many cases, excessive noise can lead to health issues, making soundproofing essential for improving both safety and efficiency. By reducing disruptive noise, companies can ensure that their workforce remains focused and that communication between team members is smooth. Furthermore, soundproofing in industrial settings must comply with EU directives on worker health and safety, such as Directive 2003/10/EC, which sets out minimum health and safety requirements regarding exposure to noise at work. Implementing appropriate soundproofing measures helps companies like Steyr-Werner maintain compliance while creating a better working environment.
