Project Overview

Noise exposure in the workplace can lead to various health and safety hazards, affecting employees' overall well-being. Prolonged exposure to high noise levels impacts the nervous and cardiovascular systems, leading to symptoms such as headaches, tinnitus, dizziness, anxiety, and sleep disturbances. In addition, excessive noise can reduce concentration, affecting productivity and work performance.

FESTO, a global leader in the production of pneumatic cylinder electromagnetic sensors, contacted DECIBEL for a soundproofing solution around their 100-hour component test bench. The continuous noise generated by the machinery was negatively affecting the concentration of employees and creating an unhealthy work environment.

Challenge

The primary challenge was to reduce the noise levels produced by the test bench while ensuring that the solution was both demountable and portable. Additionally, the machine needed access to external air for proper functioning, which meant it couldn’t be fully enclosed.

Scope of Work

• Measure sound levels and frequency responses around the test bench
• Develop a demountable, soundproofing solution that allows airflow and easy access
• Ensure compliance with noise reduction standards for workplace environments

Solution

The first step was for DECIBEL’s engineer-acoustician to measure the sound levels and frequencies of the test bench. The results showed that the sound levels reached Leq = 83.5 dB, with a peak frequency of 80 Hz, far exceeding the recommended norms for a comfortable working environment.

To meet FESTO’s requirement for portability and accessibility, DECIBEL designed a soundproofing box with detachable and opening panels. This allowed the machine to remain functional while significantly reducing noise levels. As full enclosure was not an option due to the need for airflow, the machine was placed on DECIBEL EP Pads to further reduce vibrations and noise transmission.

Results

The implementation of DECIBEL's custom soundproofing solution resulted in a noticeable reduction in noise levels, creating a much more comfortable and productive environment for FESTO employees. The demountable soundproofing box not only met the company's requirements for accessibility but also provided the flexibility needed for future testing setups.

The success of this project led FESTO to entrust DECIBEL with additional challenges related to improving the acoustic environment in their factory.
