Project Overview

David Gresham Records, one of South Africa’s most renowned independent record companies, has been producing and publishing iconic local and international artists for over four decades. With a legacy that includes names like Nickelback, Kylie Minogue, and Janet Jackson, the studio's commitment to excellence extends to its facilities. The management approached DECIBEL AFRICA to enhance the acoustics of their two editing suites and recording area, aiming to achieve an optimal sound environment without disrupting daily operations. After conducting thorough acoustic simulations and developing a tailored design, DECIBEL AFRICA was appointed to oversee the project, focusing on improving the studio’s acoustic quality and aesthetics.

Challenge

The primary objectives were to transform the acoustic environment effectively while ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing workflows. This involved eliminating room modes, smoothing the reverberation curve, and creating a clean, dry sound environment that allowed for a full spectrum of audible frequencies.

Solution

DECIBEL AFRICA implemented a comprehensive acoustic upgrade that included: replacing the existing ceiling with acoustic ceiling panels; installing a combination of textile and wooden perforated acoustic panels for enhanced absorption across mid-to-high frequencies; upgrading to acoustic curtains for additional sound control; adding laminated wood flooring to refine the studio’s aesthetic and acoustic functionality; and installing a double studio door for the vocal booth with integrated soundproofing membranes. Each element was carefully designed and integrated to treat all surfaces acoustically, ensuring a cohesive and efficient workspace for producers and musicians.

Result

The project resulted in a dramatic improvement in the acoustic environment across all treated areas. The elimination of room modes and balanced reverberation created a clean, precise soundscape, empowering the studio’s producers and musicians to work more effectively. Additionally, the aesthetic enhancements complemented the studio’s professional appeal. David Gresham Records expressed their satisfaction with the outcome, highlighting the seamless execution and the impact on the studio’s performance. A reference letter from the client underscores the success of this collaboration.
